About
Catarina Carvalho Terapeuta Ocupacional Occupational Therapist

About me

My name is Catarina Carvalho and I am a Pediatric Occupational Therapist.

I graduated in Occupational Therapy from the Escola Superior de Saúde de Alcoitão in 2013 and I'm specialised in Sensory Integration. I worked with adults for 7 years and in 2020 I started my experience in pediatrics.

I believe that every child has great potential within them but sometimes they need a little time or a gentle push in the right direction. The rehabilitation process is faster and more effective when it is done in partnership with the family and school and, as such, I seek to foster relationships of trust and transparency with both through open and regular communication.

As a therapist I feel the need to be and do better so I'm constantly updating my education. The main highlights are the Introduction Course to the Bobath Concept, Specialisation in Animal-Assisted Intervention, Advanced Training in  Technologies for Inclusion and Supporting Children with Sensory Integration Difficulties in Feeding.

Peter

7 years old, Down Syndrome

Peter presented a passive posture, lack of interest and little occupational engagement. He was constantly alone which would result in stimming. He used to have lots of accidents throughout the day and needed to develop his skills on feeding and toileting.

I worked as his shadow at school, assisting him on activities of daily living, play and learning.
Alerting sensory stimulation was provided so he could be more aware of his surroundings and prepared for learning. I adapted activities and worksheets so he could participate and be included, promoting his reading, writing and logic skills.

Today Peter can express himself more; he’s aware and motivated to learning and interacting; he uses more adequately cutlery and napkin at mealtime; he’s more regulated which reduced the stimming; and practically uses the bathroom independently.

Catarina was pivotal in our son's transition from preschool to Grade 1. Catarina has built a wonderful relationship of trust and respect with him. It has been crucial in his development, maturity and progression in school.
